CHARLOIS A LA PLAYA !

- ROTTERDAM

Charlois has long been shaped by its close relationship with the Waalhaven harbour, which historically provided work and identity for the local working-class community. As port activities move seaward, the neighbourhood struggles to offer suitable living and working conditions. “Charlois à la Playa” seeks to reconnect residents with their harbour roots by blending work and leisure, creating new public spaces along the dike and integrating arts, crafts, and modern production with existing harbour functions. By preserving and expanding harbour buildings and adding green infrastructure, the concept supports social interaction, recreation, and an ecological transition toward a new type of urban harbour
